Choosing to adopt a rescue dog is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make! It might feel as if you are ready to commit to bringing home a new member of the family, but there are some honest questions you need to ask yourself before making your final choice. One reason alone is not usually enough to consider adopting a dog. For example, even if you want to adopt a dog to give it a new, loving home, that is not necessarily enough. Of course it is a great reason to adopt a dog, but you also need to make sure that you will be capable of giving your new dog a loving home at all times. How can you know if you are ready to provide a loving home for a dog that needs one? Here are some of the main questions to ask yourself and your family before adopting a dog: Do you have the time to devote to training an adopted dog? Many adopted dogs come with the need for intensive training. Some might have been raised in dysfunctional families, or have gone through other traumatic experiences which make them fearful of humans or other dogs. These dogs will need plenty of care and attention, so it would not be wise to consider adopting a dog if you are going to be out of the home very often. Is your job going to cause any issues? Does your job require you to work long hours away from home? Do you have a history of being posted to other locations on a whim? These situations aren’t going to mix well with a new, adopted dog that needs your love and attention. If you decide that you are adopting a dog but are going to be working away from home for more than 4-6 hours per day, ensure someone else is available to give your dog a walk and check up on them. Is your home environment right for the dog? First off, if you rent from a landlord, you must be told in writing that dogs can be allowed in your home. This way, you can avoid any major problems with your dog being allowed in your home after you have made the decision to adopt. Also, remember that large and outdoorsy breeds like Border Collies or Greyhounds are not well-suited for apartments. Some breeds of dog need hours of exercise each day, so do your research carefully before committing. Do you have previous experience owning a dog? Whether you have owned one yourself or have owned one as a child with your parents, it is a good building block to have owned a dog before. This will have you better prepared for the potential challenges of adopting a dog from a rescue center. Lastly, and most importantly… is everyone in my household ready to take this on? You should ensure that yourself and everybody you live with is completely on board with the decision to adopt a dog. This is a major commitment, and the questions in this article are only a handful of the ones you should consider before extending your home to a new, four-legged member of the family! -- Jack Vale is a writer from Happy Writers, Co. in partnership with K9 Sport Sack, the top retailer for dog backpack carriers.

Winter is finally in full swing here in the desert, and with it comes the excitement of various winter activities for you to enjoy with your friends and family. Though the Chandler area may not have the traditional weather associated with winter fun, it marks the best weather of the year. As it happens, the entire East Valley provides numerous opportunities to enjoy the winter, so here is a list of activities to mark on your calendars this year. Merry Main StreetThe Temple Lights event, held annually at the Mesa Arizona Temple Grounds, will unfortunately not be possible this year due to renovations. However, the Merry Main Street event held in downtown Mesa, is still planning to go on strong from the end of November through the beginning of January. The event will have an ice-skating rink, a meet-and-greet with Santa, a Christmas market, and a fantastic ride on the Polar Express via the light rail. Tumbleweed Tree
One of the most magical part of the holidays in many communities is the lighting of the town Christmas Tree. The tree lighting event in Chandler combines the festive decorations of the holidays with a desert twist - a tree made out of tumbleweeds. Children can visit Santa’s house and workshop and also write letters to him, that are guaranteed to be delivered in time for Christmas! At 7 p.m., there will be a parade for all to enjoy, and the lighting of the tree takes place around Eight. Riverview Park Because the Phoenix winter weather is the best weather of the year, it’s a good idea to stay outside. Riverview Park is one of the top parks for a day outdoors. There are several climbing structures and all-age zip-lines. Spend some time having a late Friendsgiving or Friends Christmas BBQ at one of the many picnic areas. Alamo Drafthouse Chandler Nothing screams the holidays like a winter movie marathon. The folks at Alamo Drafthouse Chandler are holding a number of movie parties, including the Alamo Encore series, where they’ll be playing classics like Love, Actually, Elf, A Christmas Story, and Scrooged. They’ll also be holding a number of kid friendly events and have special discounts for different days. Neighborhood Lights And, of course, nothing beats the classic holiday tradition like loading up the carand heading out to view neighborhood Christmas lights. Ahwatukee, Mesa, Chandler, and Gilbert have some of the best voted housesfor light displays. Spend some quality time with the family enjoying each, and maybe come away from the experience with a few ideas for your displays for next year! Whatever you choose to do, the important part is the time you spend together. Each of these activities are sure to bring good cheer and lifelong memories. Get out and enjoy the gorgeous weather of the winter season in the East Valley! Darwin WallGraduated from Arizona State University’s College of Business with a Finance Degree in 1999. I started my Real Estate career while attending ASU as a Junior. I was a licensed assistant to a top producing real estate team at Realty Executives in Ahwatukee. Having only been in real estate for two years, I became a Multi-Million Dollar Producer, and received the Realty Executives 100% Club Award. One of the first homes I sold was to Larry Centers of the Arizona Cardinals whose wife called me off of my real estate sign. So I was selling homes for $50,000 to a million dollars at an early age. Having grown up in Chandler and attending Chandler High when it was the only High School in Chandler, my knowledge of the surrounding communities is something few can provide. These attributes are the foundation of success. I’ve earned many other awards at Realty Executives (Diamond Award) to the 2011 & 2012 ProSmart Realtor of the Year. But the most satisfying award to me is a happy client at the end of a transaction that is willing to give me a referral and a positive recommendation. My boys also enjoy playing baseball, football and basketball. My wife, Jenny, is on my Real Estate team as a licensed agent and she is the GM of our family. She is very involved with the boy’s school and volunteers a lot of hours there. I enjoy attending my kid’s sporting events. When I have time to take a “break” from things I like to work-out, whether it is weight training, a boot camp or playing basketball with my friends.
